Scuba Diving in Aquaba

Waking up with smiles on our faces, we said goodbye to the magical desert and headed to our next stop – Aquaba.

The taxi took a couple of hours and before long we arrived at the Double Tree Hilton hotel. It was luxurious.

Nearby was a beach resort, Berenice Beach Club. Here we hired a snorkel and bagged a couple of sun loungers.

Dunking out heads under the sea and breathing felt counter intuitive. However, after a few attempts we got the hang of it and were able to swim a little further out into the ocean.

Here we were greeted with the most spectacular coral reefs. Fish weaved in and out of the coral mazes. I had never seen anything like it. All colours of the rainbow could be seen under the sea surface. Hiring the snorkel was £5 well spent.

Next on the agenda was playing volleyball with a group of friendly tourists from Ukrain. They were extremely good at the sport. We jumped on the coach back to the hotel at the end of the day.

Our second day in Aquaba we went scuba diving. We waded out into the sea wearing our heavy kit. Where we could still stand we practiced putting our faces under the water. I hated it. Felt like I was suffocating even though I had plenty of oxygen in the tank. The guide told me it was all in my head and said lets go. We submerged. I asked to resurface immediately. Our brilliant guide did not give up on me and somehow persuaded me to go in again. He said lets go 1m down quickly take a picture of corals and come back. I reluctantly agreed, 30\40minutes later we resurfaced having gone down 10m and to find spectacular corals and fish. At one point a swarm of silver shiny fish brushed past us. We also saw finding nemo and a whole range of other colourful fish. I’m pleased I faced my fear but I’m not sure I’ll rush to go diving again.

From Aquaba we travelled back to Amman via a hotel resort located next to the Dead Sea. It was a beautiful spot. We dipped in the dead sea which felt very oily. Also on trying to get out we cut our feet on salt crystals. I would recommend wearing water shoes if you opt to go in the sea. The swimming pool at the hotel was something else and the food tasty.

Sadly, it was time to go home, we had a wonderful trip in Jordan and would highly recommend visiting.
